North East Derbyshire MP backs incinerator fight

North East Derbyshire MP Natascha Engel has backed local residents campaigning to stop an incinerator being built on the borders of her constituency.

The local MP has presented a petition in Parliament and is now collecting signatures to hand to Derbyshire County Council before their planning committee makes a decision on the application in early January.

Natascha has also formally objected herself on the ground that the technology is untried and that putting such a facility so close to over 30,000 properties, many of which are in her constituency.

She has stated that nobody should gamble on the health of local residents. She also believes that the local roads are not capable of sustaining the increase in HGV traffic that would accompany the incinerator and that the local economy would be damaged if the proposal is accepted.

Said Natascha:

“If this proposal is passed it would be a disaster for the area and I strongly oppose it.

“The technology is untested and I see no reason why we should gamble with the health of so many people. Hundreds of jobs are at risk and the area faces gridlock on the roads as hundreds of HGVs brining waste from all over the country head for the area.

"I have already made my objects known formally and raised the matter in Parliament.

"I am now collecting signatures to hand to Derbyshire County Council before they make their decision. Please help by signing it! If we work together we can hopefully see off this idea."
