MP unveils Christmas Card winner

Five-year-old Jasmine Barker has maintained a proud tradition for talented Dronfield children and her design has been chosen as the winner of the Christmas competition.

Each year, when local Member of Parliament Natascha Engel organises a competition to find a suitable design for her official Christmas card, she invites children from all the primary schools in North East Derbyshire to take part.

Hundreds of colourful entries are received from far and wide.

Jasmine, a pupil at Dronfield Infant School, had her striking painting of a golden Christmas angel selected by Natascha and her fellow judge Mike Wilson, editor of the Derbyshire Times.

Her prize was a trip to Bayliss Printers at Shireoaks, near Worksop, to see her design being turned into Natascha’s 2009 card. More than 2,000 have been printed to send to Natascha’s friends and colleagues - including the Prime Minister Gordon Brown at 10 Downing Street.

Said Natascha:

“Jasmine’s entry really stood out; it is a wonderful design and I love the angel’s big smile!"

A thrilled Jasmine said:

“I enjoy painting and drawing maps and this is the first time one of my paintings has won anything.”

Jasmine has three brothers and when she is not busy with her paintbrush she also enjoys rock-climbing, tennis and swimming
